She had come back here, back to him. Rick had won. Now he had a choice.

He could punish Sandra or he could welcome her back, show her off as a trophy and prove that the rockers were abandoning their own sinking ship.

She was in his power. He was in control, and that in itself almost made up for the suffering of the past.

‘I’ve left Alec,’ she said.

‘About time too.’

‘I suppose you’re right.’

‘What did you think you were doing, playing around with that grease monkey?’

‘I didn’t leave him because he’s a rocker.’

‘It’s disgusting, the two of you shacking up like that.’

‘Don’t start, Rick. I’m not in the mood.’

‘Especially after what it did to our brothers.’

Sandra would have hit him then, but her guards restrained her. She looked more angry than Rick had seen her before, and suddenly he knew what was different about her. She had an energy, an air of determination, that she had 142

not possessed for almost two decades. Her eyes gleamed with purpose where once they had been dulled by defeat.

‘Don’t you think I feel guilty about what happened to them?’ she cried. ‘But it wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t anybody’s fault except their own, because they couldn’t think of anything but fighting. They couldn’t let it end.’

‘Why should they?’

‘Yeah, that’s right,’ said Davey. ‘Why should they have to kiss up to your boyfriend just because you couldn’t see him for what he was?’

‘Won’t you at least listen to me?’ pleaded Sandra, ignoring Davey altogether.

‘I put my life on the line coming here, Rick. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?’

‘You probably just realised which side was going to win this war.’

‘You’ve been saying that for years. So has Alec.’

‘It’s different now. We’ve got weapons.’

‘There’s been a power cut.’

‘You haven’t seen my new weapon. My Technician’s making it now.’ At least, it better had be, thought Rick. ‘It’s bigger and better than anything you’ve seen before, and it’s got a self-contained, everlasting power source. I asked for that specifically.’

‘You’re making the same mistake that Jack and Phil did.’

‘You want this war ended, don’t you? I’m ending it!’

‘Perhaps you should go and talk to Alec,’ said Sandra sourly. ‘You already sound like him.’

‘That’s a filthy lie!’

Rick’s control was slipping. But he couldn’t let that happen. Not in front of so many of his people. He might destroy the illusion, remind them that he was just a child inside.

‘Do you know why I came here, Rick?’ said Sandra. ‘Really?’

‘Sick of the smell of rockers, I bet,’ spat Davey.

‘Because I can’t get through to Alec. He won’t listen to common sense. So, I thought I’d try you instead. You keep saying you’re so much better than him; here’s your chance to prove it.’

Rick meant to dismiss her with a sneer, but it froze on his face as he saw the new look that came into his sister’s eyes. Contempt. She was showing contempt for him.

‘It looks like I was wasting my time,’ said Sandra.

For years, Alec had dreamed of what the Brain would look like.
